Point d’orgue de la carrière du tandem Kadar / Klos, LE MIROIR AUX ALOUETTES est un film phare des années 60, terrible et émouvante évocation de la répression antisémite pendant l’occupation. Il fait partie de ces films qui jettent alors un regard nouveau, plus complexe, sur la guerre. Le film a été couvert de prix dans le monde entier.

English title: A SHOP ON THE HIGH STREET Original title: OBCHOD NA KORZE Directed by: Jan Kadar et Elmar Klos With : Jozef Kroner Ida Kaminska, Frantisek Zvarik et Hana Slikova Czechoslovakia, 1965, PAL, 4/3 - 125 mn zone 2, Black and white, mono Polish Version with French subtitles In 1942, in a small town of Czechoslovakia, the poor carpenter Tony Brtko is appointed "Aryanizator" of a small shop by his fascist brother-in-law Mark Kolkotsky. Tony finds that the store is owned by a deaf and senile seventy year-old widow called Rozalie Lautmann. The old lady is financially supported by the Jewish Community. Tony makes friends with Ms Lautmann and helps her in the store by repairing her furniture. When the Jews are expelled from the town by fascists, Tony decides to help the old lady. A SHOP ON THE HIGH STREET has been funded by the authorities of Czechoslovakia (so have been all films under communism), produced at the Barrandov Film Studio in Prague, Czech Republic, and filmed with a Slovak cast on location in the town of Sabinov (north-eastern Slovakia) and on the Barrandov sound stage. The film won the 1965 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and Kaminska was nominated in 1966 for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
